Goat’s milk formula has become increasingly popular in recent years. Providing critical nutrients similar to breast milk, goat’s milk formula is a great alternative to cow's milk formula.
Here we look at the many important reasons parents are choosing goat’s milk formula.
Benefits of Goats Milk Formula
1. Similar to breastmilk:
Goat's milk formula has oligosaccharides similar to breastmilk; it acts as a prebiotic making digestion easier because of healthy gut bacteria. This also makes goat's milk formula easier to absorb than cow's milk formula.
2. Higher in some vitamins and minerals than cow’s milk:
Compared to regular cow's milk, goat's milk naturally contains higher levels of certain vitamins; this includes vitamin A, vitamin C, magnesium and calcium.
3. EU organic certified goats milk baby formula:
Comes without any synthetic pesticides or herbicides—your baby will get the nontoxic nourishment they deserve.
4. Free from harmful ingredients, preservatives, and flavors:
Goats milk formula contains no wheat, no soy, no peanut ingredients, no added sugar, and no palm oil. Goats milk formula is gluten free, and GMO-Free.
5. Goat’s milk formula is less likely to be troublesome for the babies who are sensitive to cow’s milk proteins:
Goats milk formula protein generally forms a smaller, softer, and looser curd in the gut than cow milk formula which makes goats milk formula naturally easier to digest.
Cow's Milk Allergy vs. Cow’s Milk Protein Intolerance
It is important to note that an allergy to cow’s milk is not the same as a milk protein intolerance.
Milk allergies in infants can affect as much as 4.9% of the population. Knowing what to look for in your formula-fed baby can help parents with the confusion between a milk allergy and milk intolerance.
Milk Allergy
With a milk allergy, an infant's immune system reacts negatively to the proteins in cow’s milk. The baby's immune system sees the cow’s milk protein as an unwanted substance and then releases histamines and other chemicals to fight the invader.
Symptoms of milk allergies in babies include:
- Frequent spitting up
- Vomiting
- Signs of abdominal pain, or colic-like symptoms, such as excessive crying and irritability (especially after feedings)
- Diarrhea
- Blood in stool
- Hives
- A scaly skin rash
- Coughing or wheezing
- Watery eyes and stuffy nose
- Trouble breathing or a bluish skin color
- Swelling (especially of the mouth and throat)
Goats milk does contain lactose as does all mammal-producing animals, although goat’s milk contains a tenth less lactose than cow's milk.
Interestingly, due to higher protein amounts and other properties that make it easier to digest, many babies with cow’s milk allergies often do not experience the same allergy to goat’s milk.
If your baby or toddler has a dairy allergy, please speak with a pediatrician before you make any changes to your baby or toddler’s routine eating habits.
Milk intolerance
Involving the digestive system, milk intolerance occurs when an infant is not able to digest the sugar in milk, called lactose. Infants with lactose intolerance will fare much better on a baby formula with a low amount of lactose like you find in goat milk formula.
Symptoms of lactose intolerance in babies include:
- Gas
- Diarrhea
- Bloated stomach
- Spitting up
- Irritability, crying or other colic symptoms
- Failure to thrive and gain weight
Newborns and babies with sensitive stomachs may also benefit from HiPP HypoAllergenic. HiPP HA helps babies with cognitive development, immune strength, and digestive healthiness as well.
